Mentawai Mooring Movement

The Mentawai Islands are a jewel in the crown of the West Sumatra Province, Indonesia. White sand beaches, swaying coconut palms and consistent waves are a few of the allures that define Mentawai.

Mentawai is surrounded by world class waves for surfing.

Mentawai waves are so good because they break on coral reef. Rapid development has produced a fleet of speedboats and charter boats which ferry tourists to and from the waves and when the boats drop their anchors, they cause catastrophic damage to the coral reefs.

Any sized anchor will be destructive if deployed in the wrong location.

Mooring Movement exists as a partner with the tourism industry to mitigate the damage done by their anchoring activities. Since 2008, The Mentawai Mooring Movement has installed and maintained moorings around northern Mentawai, reducing anchoring by over 95% for speedboats.
